Car Insurance Question  I got a DUI 1 year ago. I completed all my classes and fines. My license was suspended for 8 months. That time has been passed and the California DMV is now saying I have to pay $150 to get my license back. Does that mean my licence is suspended still until I pay the DMV?

Yes, if the California Department of Motor Vehicles requires a reinstatement fee of $150 to be paid then it would mean that your license is suspended until you pay this fee and follow any other steps required of you to get your driver's license reinstated.

The CA DMV notes that the steps you take to get your drivers license back depends on the reason(s) it was suspended. For a Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (DUI) charge the DMV notes that one must:

  • Complete a mandatory suspension period.
  • Pay a reissue fee to DMV.
  • File Proof of Financial Responsibility (California Insurance Proof Certificate, SR 22)
  • File a Notice of Completion Certificate (DL 101) (You must complete a Driving under the Influence [DUI] Treatment program.)
  • Pay fines to the court.
  • Possible imprisonment.

The DMV notes that a restricted license may be issued prior to the completion date of the mandatory suspension period if certain reinstatement requirements are met but since you state that your suspension period is over this would appear to not concern your situation.

If you need to find out more information on what exact steps you must take to reinstate you license check with the CA DMV. You can contact the DMV at 1-800-777-0133 during their normal business hours - between 8-5, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and between 9-5 on Wednesdays - for information about your particular situation.
