I was photographed by a camera for running a red light in NYC twice in the same day. Does this require points on my license and will this effect my insurance premium? What other impact can this have?

If you were photographed running a red light in New York City (NYC) by a red light camera you should receive a ticket in the mail explaining about the violation and listing what the fine amount is and how to pay for it. Since you were caught twice doing this, you should expect 2 citations in the mail.

From the information we have gathered it appears a ticket for getting flashed by the red light camera for running a red light in NYC normally has a fine of $50 - $55 and no NYS DMV points attached to it.

You can contact the court or other entity listed on the citation or the NYS DMV for more information regarding the penalties or impact on your NYS driver's license and driving record.

As for your insurance rates being affected by these moving violations, you would need to find out from your insurance agent if or how your insurer's rating system factors in such tickets.

In New York State auto insurance premium surcharges due to accidents or convictions are governed by the Insurance Law and regulations. These laws allow surcharges to be applied during the experience period (typically three years) for specified incidents.

To find out more about what violation convictions are surchargeable according to NYS law ask your agent or contact the NYS Department of Insurance.
