Depending upon the reason that you were canceled with an insurance company it may be difficult to find insurance with a different insurance and may cost you more. If your auto insurance policy was non-renewed instead of canceled it may be easier to find a new company to insure you. If instead you were canceled for non-payment then a new insurance company may find it riskier to insure you since your history shows that you may not pay for the policy in full.
If you were canceled for non-payment it will depend upon the underwriting rules of the insurance company you are trying to get insurance with if you will be required to pay in full for your next auto insurance policy. For example our affiliate, Direct General, will usually reinstate a policy that has cancelled due to non-payment - as long as the lapse in coverage has been less than 30 days, and there have been no losses.
According to the Wyoming insurance regulator, the WY Department of Insurance, when a company refuses to renew a private passenger auto insurance policy, it must notify you at least 30 days before your policy expires. In the case of nonpayment of premium, at least 10 days notice must be given.
The company may cancel your auto insurance for any reason within the first 60 days of coverage. Once your policy has been in effect for more than 60 days, it can only be canceled for the following reasons:
1. Nonpayment of premium.
2. The driver’s license or motor vehicle registration of any one operator residing in the policyholder’s household (including all insured, named or otherwise) or who customarily operates a motor vehicle insured under the policy has been under suspension or revocation during the policy period.
The insurer may cancel coverage only to that operator by issuing an endorsement to the policy excluding coverage to that operator. Refusal of such restrictive endorsement by said policyholder shall constitute grounds for cancellation of the policy. Modification of automobile physical damage coverage by applying a deductible amount not exceeding five hundred dollars ($500) shall not be deemed a cancellation.
3. Fraud on the part of the applicant in filling out the application.
