In Utah, as in most states, it may depend upon the reason the SR-22 is required that determines the length that you must carry the SR22.
According to information on the UT DMV site if you were found driving without insurance the UT law requires the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to maintain proof of the person's owner's or operator's security for a three-year period and the insurer must notify DPS if the policy is terminated. If a person who has been convicted under this law terminates his or her insurance, the person must surrender his or her driver license to DPS.
If a person who has canceled the certificate of insurance applies for a driver license within three years from the date that the state originally required proof of owner's or operator's security, DPS is required to obtain proof of owner's or operator's security before reissuing the driver license. DPS must maintain the proof of the security for the remainder of the three-year period.
The Utah Driver's Manual states that if you are uninsured and at-fault in an accident then a court may render a judgement against you for damages to other injured parties. If this judgement is not satisfied within 60 days after the court decision, your driving privilege will be taken away. This rule may apply not only to drivers, but also to those who own or maintain the vehicle.
If your license is taken away, the suspension will be in effect until the judgement is satisfied and you have filed “future proof” of financial responsibility in the form of an SR-22. “Future proof” is evidence that you will be able to pay for any damage to others if you are responsible for a future accident. It is required if you have failed to satisfy a judgement as explained above or if your driving privilege is suspended or revoked for a violation of the motor vehicle laws.
This proof must be maintained for three years following the date of the suspension or revocation or, in the case of an unsatisfied judgement, three years from the date of reinstatement. The most common way to file “future proof” is to furnish evidence that you are covered by an SR-22 automobile liability insurance policy.
