I live in Michigan and my insurance company totaled my car. My question is: How long can I keep the rental car they are paying for after I have accepted their offer? I am still looking for a replacement vehicle. My policy provides up to 30 days rental.

You will need to read through the terms of the rental car reimbursement portion of your policy and speak to your agent about the length of time you can keep the rental car. Your policy may note that the rental car is until your car is fixed, or a settlement agreed upon however the longest period of time would be up to 30 days at the most. Thus if a settlement amount for your total loss car has been agreed upon then the rental car reimbursement period may be over. Again it is up to the exact terms of your policy.

In general a rental reimbursement add-on compensates you for the loss of your vehicle during the reasonable time in which it takes to repair your car. Or if your car is found to be a total loss then the rental car allowance may be for until a settlement offer is given to you for the actual cash value (ACV) of the car.

Insurance regulators for most states advise that you ask whether your policy will pay for a rental car until you can get a replacement vehicle or until a settlement is determined.
