My father had my car and his car on his auto insurance policy. He just passed away, how long do I have to change it into my name?

Sorry for the loss of your father. Since state laws and terms of insurance policies differ you will need to find out from your father's insurance agent how long you have to change over the policy and what steps to take to get a car insurance policy for at least your vehicle in your name.

An auto insurance policy normally terminates upon the death of the policyholder, usually by the request of the estate.

Auto insurance is a contractual agreement between an insurance company and an insured (policyholder). The first section of the policy is the "declarations page," which lists what coverages are in effect and the dollar amount of coverage. The next section of the policy includes the actual contract language, which clearly describes the insurance company's rights and responsibilities as well as the policyholders.

Certain general provisions are required by state law, but policies can be different. It is important in your situation to read the policy issued to your father. If you have more questions, contact your father’s insurance agent or company for clarification and information on what the process is now that your father has passed away.
