What are the fines and points for going 1-9 over the speed limit and also for 10-20 over? I live in VA and am licensed in Virginia.

According to the Virginia Department of Vehicles violation schedule it is speeding 1-9 mph above the posted speed limit is 3 points and the conviction remains on your driving record for 5 years. Speeding 10-14 mph above the posted speed limit is 4 points and remains on your record for 5 years.

There is information from the Uniform Fine Schedule for Prepayable Traffic Offenses available from the Virginia Courts site. Here it lists that exceeding the speed limit normally costs $5 per mile over the speed limit plus a $52 processing fee. If you were speeding in a residence district or work zone then the fine amount is more.

So to find out the exact fine amounts you can contact your local court since individual jurisdictions usually have the final say of how much a traffic violation ticket will costs with court fees, processing fees, etc usually. Also the fine amounts may have been amended to higher amounts then the fine schedule we reviewed. For example the Court site for Virginia Beach, VA lists speeding ticket processing fee as $66.

Below is some informative descriptions of new Virginia laws that affect licensed drivers in VA as of the first of July, 2007.

AsĀ of July 1, 2007 Virginia drivers convicted of serious traffic offenses will be charged conviction-related abusive driver fees. These fees do not apply to the typical traffic violation such as failure to yield, or parking too near a fire hydrant, for example. Abusive driver fees will only apply when the person is convicted of reckless driving, driving on a suspended or revoked license, driving under the influence, or other serious traffic offenses that occur after July 1, 2007. The fees can be paid in installments over three years

Also VA drivers who accumulate 8 or more demerit points will be charged demerit-point-related abusive driver. These fees can not be imposed for demerit points related to offenses committed prior to July 1, 2007. No single traffic violation results in 8 demerits points and a person has the option of attending a driver improvement clinic to reduce the points on their record. Bad drivers who accumulate and keep 8 or more demerit points will be charged $100 and will be charged an additional $75 for each demerit point over eight up to a maximum of $700.
