I work for a Production Company in Toronto, Canada and we are shooting a TV series in the US this summer/fall. We will be purchasing a vehicle in California and will be using it to drive across the country as part of the show. I am wondering how we should go about getting insurance without a US address. Is this possible? If yes, where can I get a quote? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We do not have any insurance affiliates or partners who will be able to cover this risk by providing an insurance policy.

Most insurance carriers will require a US license and a US address in order to issue an insurance policy. After going over the available scenarios, we would suggest that you may want to see if the production company will pay for the vehicle, register it in their name, and possibly have it covered under their policy (assuming it will cover the vehicle in the US).

If the Canadian insurance would not allow this then we would recommend finding a specialty insurance company that would take on this risk and due to the nature of use it would likely need to be a commercial policy since it is being used work/business purposes.

Your employer may want to check into short-term video production insurance. We have only read about this type of coverage but there are many companies who deal in this type of insurance for the entertainment industry. These package policies cover the basic risks involved in video shoots and differ on the coverages offered depending on your needs.

To help find a specialty insurance carrier that will cover the car for the production company's needs, try contacting the California Department of Insurance. Their consumer division should be able to advise you about the type of insurance your vehicle will need and may be able to provide you with information on what CA companies that would offer such coverages.
