I received 6 points for a speeding violation. I paid the ticket and now received an assessment from New York. I have a Pennsylvania driver's license. Will it affect my PA license if I do not pay the assessment?

Pennsylvania and New York are both part of a Driver License Compact (DLC) that allows for the member states to report tickets received by motorist back to the state where the license was issued.

PennDOT has decided to not assess points or record minor traffic violations on your PA driving record that have occurred out of state. So normally the New York ticket speeding ticket would not appear on your PA driver’s history or be assigned PA violation points.

In NYS, drivers who are convicted of specific traffic violations will be required to pay an assessment to the DMV. The NYS Driver Responsibility Program applies to all drivers who operate, or operated, a motor vehicle in the State of New York, regardless of the state the motorist is licensed in.

In addition to any fines, fees, penalties, or surcharges that you pay for a traffic conviction, you must pay the driver responsibility assessment according the NYS DMV.

If you receive a statement from the NY DMV that instructs you to pay a driver responsibility assessment and you do not pay the assessment, the DMV will suspend your driver license, or your driving privileges.

Your driver's license being suspended in New York would most likely affect your driving privileges in Pennsylvania as well. Both states are part of the Non Resident Violator Compact (NRVC) that requires member states to suspend the license of a driver that does not comply with an out of state ticket by paying the fines associated with it or otherwise take care of the ticket.

So most likely your PA driver's license will be suspended if you choose to not pay the NY assessment related to your speeding ticket. For the specifics about your situation though and what would happen if you chose not to not pay the NY driver responsibility fee you would need to contact PennDOT.
