Car Insurance Question  I received my G1 in September 2006. My question is do I have to get my G2 before September 2007? I work in a high paced environment which involves lot of travelling (for months consecutively to Asia, Europe, NA) and this is the main reason why I didn't have time to get my G2 yet. Please advise.

In Ontario, Canada a new driver must hold a G1 licence for a minimum of 12 months before attempting the G1 road test but the level 1 license is valid for up to 5 years. To move up to level 2 or G2 status you must pass a road test.

Your G1 or G2 license will expire 5 years after you received your original G1 licence. If you have not passed the G1 and G2 road tests and earned a full G license by within 5 years you will have to need to redo the knowledge test to get a G1 and/or retake the G1 road test to get your G2.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), your Level One (G1) novice licence or Level Two (G2) for Ontario, Canada will expire if you do not exit the Graduated Licensing Program within 5 years after you obtained it.

The MTO states that to keep your driving privileges, you can take the appropriate road test to graduate to the next level of licence, example, take Level One road test to graduate to Level Two, or Level Two road test to graduate to a full class licence. If not, your licence will expire and you will have to take the knowledge test to re-qualify for Level One, or take Level One road test to re-qualify for Level Two.

You can contact the MTO for more information but it would appear that you would just need to move up to your G2 and then full license before 5 years have elapsed from the time you received your original G1 novice license which in your case would be 2011.
