Car Insurance Question  If some one has Oklahoma license, got ticket in OK and took care of it (paid the ticket) then moved to Texas, is the OK ticket going to show up in TX records? Will it be on the Texas driving record and how could it affect insurance.

The Texas Department of Public Safety notes that out of state violations are placed on a Texas driving record, however it does not mention if they are brought over from your previous state's driving record or not. This does mean for certain that if you had a TX license and received say a speeding ticket in Oklahoma that a conviction for this offense would go on a TX driving record.

We asked the TX DPS if prior driving records are transferred over onto a new Texas driver's license and record but have not yet received a response back. Hopefully when you go into a Texas licensing office to obtain your TX driver's license a representative there will be able to tell you if the violation from your Oklahoma license will be transferred over to your new TX license.

We can advise you that new residents moving into Texas, who have a valid driver license from their home state, have 30 days after entry into the state to secure a Texas driver license so be sure to exchange your OK license for a TX one within this time frame.

As for insurance, whether the Oklahoma moving violation conviction transfers over to your Texas driving record or not it could still affect your TX insurance rates. Most insurance companies will pull your previous state's motor vehicle record (MVR) if you have moved in the last few years to check that driving record as well as your current state's driving record.

It will depend upon the type of moving violation you were convicted of (minor or major offense) as well as your insurance company's rating system if this one Oklahoma infraction will affect your rates. To get the best rates available to you, shop around for Texas auto insurance.

Update:The License Issuance Bureau of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has now responded to our query about if the previous Oklahoma ticket would show up on a new TX driver’s license. Their response is that the ticket should not show up on the Texas driving record if the ticket was resolved in Oklahoma before requesting a Texas driver license.
