Car Insurance Question  I am considering starting a business, in the State of California, which would require me to drive other peoples cars on a very regular basis (2 to 3 times a day). What type of insurance would I require for this purpose? Would normal car insurance cover me to drive others cars or would I need to get a specialized commercial insurance for this?

If you are going to be driving cars for business reasons or for profit you would normally need a special business / commercial policy since you will be driving other people's cars for reason other then personal use. Your personal insurance would not cover you for business purposes plus you will likely be required to have higher limits due to the nature of your work.

We believe business liability coverage will be required if you are going to drive other people's cars for business reasons. We would suggest getting quotes from different companies to compare general business liability coverage insurance.

You will need to inform the agent / insurance company about the exact nature of your work and business. Explain that you are looking for the required liability coverage, as you do not own the other people’s motor vehicles that you will be driving.

If instead of having your own business, if you were working as an employee engaged in such a business, where you drove someone else's car, you employer would likely need to have you covered for such accidents or incidents that may occur. Employment at a valet parking lot, garage mechanic or rental car service often qualifies for such commercial liability coverage.

To find out what exact auto insurance coverages the state of California may require you to have for your business venture, contact the CA Department of Insurance.
