There is a rumor that goes around from time to time stating that Ontario is going to raise the age requirements for obtaining a drivers license however according to the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) for Ontario, Canada this is not true.
The MOT states that they have reviewed all Ontario laws that set a minimum age requirement. After this review, the government has decided to maintain 16 years as the minimum legal age driving. Ontario is not planning on raising or lowering age at which an individual can obtain a driver's license.
The Ministry of Transportation agrees that the average 16 year-old has sufficient maturity and judgment to handle the responsibility of driving. They were concerned by the number of collisions involving young people and inexperienced drivers and that is why the Graduated Licensing System was introduced in 1994.
Under the graduated licensing system in Ontario, Canada new drivers earn full driving privileges in two stages. In stage one (the G1), new drivers learn while accompanied by a licensed driver who has at least four years of driving experience. This stage lasts 12 months, or is reduced to eight months for those who successfully complete an approved beginner driver education course. The driver then advances onto a G2 license and finally a G or full license.
