We did not see a description of unsafely merging or going too slow listed as having points under the Points Value lists for Maryland, so it is likely that this violation will fall under the heading of any moving violation not listed on the points schedule and not contributing to an accident. If this is how it is deemed then it would be assigned one point. You can check the points list though to see if you find the statute listed which you were cited for. The state changes the link and makes it hard to locate the point system, so we have listed the most common point values here:
- Driving without proof of insurance: 5 points
- Speeding (9 miles per hour (MPH) or less): 1 points
- Speeding (10 MPH and over): 2 points
- Speeding (30 MPH and over): 5 points
- Failure to yield: 1 points
- Failure to stop at a red light: 2 points
- Failure to stop for a school bus: 2 points
- Improper turn: 1 points
- Unlawful use of your driver's license: 12 points
- Loaning or borrowing a driver's license: 12 points
- Driving without a license: 5 points
- Speed contests: 5 points
- Driving alone with a permit: 5 points
- Reckless driving: 6 points
- Driving with a suspended license: 3 points
- Clicking off your lights to evade identification: 8 points
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs: 12 points

The MD Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) will suspend the privilege to drive, of any person who has failed to comply with the requirements of the Maryland District Court, Circuit Court, U.S. District Court or an out-of-state court. So if you fail to pay the ticket or fail to appear in court to fight the ticket then your MD driver’s license will be suspended.
The MVA requires the surrender of any license which is suspended, revoked, refused or cancelled. Credit for the term of the suspension, revocation, or period of restriction shall begin only after the license is received by the MVA.
