A Rhode Island question: I had heard something along the lines of "If you pay a moving violation ticket within 3 days, the ticket doesn't go on your record." Is this true? Do Insurance companies really not find out, or do they find out and not increase insurance?

No, we are not aware of any 3 day rule for paying a Rhode Island moving violation ticket and be able to keep it off your driving record.

The RI Traffic Tribunal gives information on how to pay for various moving violation tickets and this is not mentioned by them at all so it would appear to be a rumor or urban myth, however you can contact your local traffic court to find out for certain.

The Traffic Tribunal does say that if you have a good driving record you may request that your summons be dismissed upon payment of costs by pleading guilty with a good driving record. You must appear in court to request this procedure. “Good driving record” means no moving violations within the three (3) years prior to the current violation.

While with this plea, good driving, you only pay court costs and not the fine for the ticket the offense still goes on your driving record so an insurance company can see it and thus it could affect your rates.

If you are convicted of a moving violation and it goes on your driving record it can affect your auto insurance rates. The next time your insurance carrier pulls your MVR (motor vehicle record) they will see the offense and depending upon their rating system it could raise your premiums. To find out about your insurance companies rating system you can speak with your agent or contact the RI insurance regulator with whom insurers must file their rates with.
