Car Insurance Question  How far back is an insurance company in Texas allowed to check your driving record which would also include a DWI?

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety moving violations appear on a driver record for a period of 5 years with the exception of serious offenses. Examples of serious offenses include DWI and No Liability Insurance, which will remain on a Texas driving record indefinitely.

The Texas Department of Insurance states that a good driving record can save you money. If you have accidents or tickets on your driving record, you'll likely be placed in a nonstandard company, which charges higher rates.

In addition, companies can add penalties - called surcharges - to your premium for major driving offenses, such as a DWI, and accidents resulting in property damage of $1,000 or more. Surcharges are mandatory for rate-regulated companies and stay on your premium for three years.

So while the DWI will remain on a person's TX driving history indefinitely the surcharge given to a driver for this offense stays normally for 3 years. Typically, the longest amount of time a company will go back is 10 years, but that is rare. Five years is the average amount of time that companies review.
