With a Michigan Learners License Level 1, can you drive out of state?

In the state of Michigan one can apply for a level one learner's license at an early age. One must be at least 14 years 9 months old and have successfully completed Segment 1 of an approved driver education program and present a Segment 1 Certificate of Completion to the MI Secretary of State Office (SOS). You must also have a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult sign the Level 1 application

According to the MI SOS with a Level 1 License, a teen may operate a motor vehicle only when accompanied by a licensed parent or legal guardian or any licensed driver 21 years of age or older designated by the parent or legal guardian.

Your parent or guardian is your responsible to make sure your as a teen completes the required supervised driving with your parent or another licensed adult driver before Segment 2 of driver education begins.

To be eligible to apply for a Level 2 Intermediate License, applicants must:

  • Present a Level 1 Learner's License or acceptable identification from the DE-40 Identification Requirements for an Original Driver License or Personal Identification Card form
  • Be at least 16 years old

There are also a few other requirements to move up in the Michigan graduated drivers licensing (GDL) system.

While we did not find any conditions or restrictions regarding a Level 1 or Level 2 license holder from driving out of state we would recommend that you check with the MI SOS to make certain the state allows you to do so.

Also if you are planning on driving out of state you should also check with the Department of Motor Vehicles of the other states. It is likely that if you are under the minimum age of driving for other states in which you plan to travel that you may not be able to legally operate a car in another state even with a level 1 learner's license from Michigan. If other states do permit you to operate a vehicle within their state limits you may have additional conditions or restrictions to follow.
