Your DUI conviction will remain part of your permanent New Jersey DMV driving record. Since you have now moved to California you should check with the CA Department of Motor Vehicles to find out if they have placed this DUI or any other offenses that were previously on your NJ driving record on your new California driver's history.
Effective January 1, 2007, new California legislation extends the reporting period for DUI offenses from 7 to 10 years for all public requestors, including insurance companies.
Under the new law, you may not qualify for a good driver discount again until 10 years from the date of your DUI violation. Up until 2007 a DUI may have been considered by an insurance company for premium surcharges for a period of seven years however now it can be considered in CA for ten years.
Since your DUI took place out of state you may want to contact the California Department of Insurance, the insurance regulator for CA, to find out how long an insurance company in CA can rate you on this NJ DUI from 2005. You may also want to contact your insurance representative if you have additional questions regarding your insurance premiums.
