Lets say a friend of mine is borrowing my car and he/she involves in a car accident where he/she is at fault. He/She has car insurance. So, their car insurance company should deal with this mess, not mine?

In general if you lend your car to a friend it is your insurance that is primary if they are in an accident while operating your vehicle. Insurance normally follows a car first, meaning your insurance as the car owner, and then if your coverages' limits are exceeded then your friend's auto insurance, since he/she was the driver, should be secondary or excess.

So if you give permission to your friend to drive your car and he or she is in an accident where he/she is at fault then the claims would typically go through your car insurance policy first. Before loaning your vehicle to a friend or family member it is recommended that you first check read through your policy and speak with your auto insurance agent to make certain that he or she will be covered if he/she drives your vehicle. Some policies have exclusions that would keep your coverages from being extended to someone else driving your car.
