In NC does insurance follow the vehicle?

Yes, normally car insurance in North Carolina, as in most states, follows the vehicle first and driver second.

This means if you loan your vehicle to a friend and they are in an accident then it would be your insurance, as the car's owner, that would be used for the damages sustained in the collision. If your primary auto insurance limits are exceeded then the driver's insurance policy would be used as secondary or excess.

According to the NC Department of Insurance (DOI) an NC Personal Automobile Policy will cover you or any family member while using any automobile or trailer, and any person using your covered automobile with permission. The policy will pay up to the limits listed in your policy.
