I just got a Kentucky speeding ticket for 81 in a 70, I am from Michigan. What will happen if I don't pay this ticket?

As you are likely aware your home state of Michigan is not a member of the Driver's License Compact (DLC) however the Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) site has information showing that out of state tickets may still be added to your MI driving record.

In the MI SOS FAQ section it is asked if a Michigan driver gets a traffic ticket in another state what will show up on the MI driving record. The SOS answer is that the out of state offense is likely to eventually appear on your Michigan driving record.

It continues on to say if the violation substantially corresponds to a violation of a Michigan law, then the conviction will be posted to your driving record and points will be assessed as required by the Michigan Vehicle Code. If the ticket is for an offense for which a suspension would have been given if the ticket had been received in Michigan, then a suspension will be imposed after the posting of the ticket, allowing time for due process and the sending of a notification letter.

Michigan SOS does not state exactly which states they have agreements with but notes that most states are reciprocal and provide ticket information to the driver's home state. Michigan law requires that the same action be taken for tickets received out-of-state as those received in Michigan, therefore, points and suspensions may be imposed.

So it sounds as if the Kentucky courts will inform MI of your speeding ticket if you plead guilty and pay the fine. Once this is done the offense will be placed on your driving record along with 3 points, the amount of points assessed for being cited for going 11 through 15 mph over the legal speed limit.

If you chose to ignore your speeding ticket from KY it is likely Kentucky will suspend your license there. The KY courts will also probably notify Michigan that you did not comply with the ticket for your moving violation even though MI is not a member of the Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC). This compact requires member states to inform a driver's licensing state if they fail to pay or otherwise take care of a ticket and then the home state to suspend the motorist's license until the citation is properly taken care of.

Failure to comply or failure to appear for a ticket in Michigan results in the MI Department of State suspending the driver license of person who fails to respond to a traffic citation (FAC) or fail to comply with a Court judgment (FCJ). The Department notifies the individual that his/her license is suspended until the matter is resolved. It is possible this penalty may also apply if you choose to not pay an out of state ticket but you would need to check with the MI SOS to find out for certain.
