I live in the city of Baltimore and getting ready to purchase a used vehicle. What are the least expensive vehicles to insure? What are the least stolen vehicles? How do the 2000 Honda CRV and 2000 Honda Accord fair? Thanks

There are several different studies done by different institutes that show that motor vehicles are most likely and least likely to be stolen.

According to the latest studies done by Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the 2003-2005 model year vehicles that are least likely to be stolen include:

  • Ford Taurus station wagon
  • Pontiac Vibe
  • Buick LeSabre
  • Buick Park Avenue

The HLDI lists the following at the most likely 2003 - 2005 model year vehicles to be stolen (due to the highest theft claims):

  • Cadillac Escalade EXT 4dr 4WD
  • Cadillac Escalade 4dr
  • GMC Savana 1500 cargo
  • Dodge Ram 1500 quad

HLDI's findings show that vehicle models with high overall theft losses vary by geographic area. For example, the Dodge Stratus, Chrysler Sebring and Plymouth Breeze have very high losses in and around Washington, DC. Losses also are high for the 2003 Nissan Maxima and for the Lexus RX 330 in areas in and around New York City.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) also looked into the type of cars most often stolen. They found that the nation’s motor vehicle thieves favor imports over domestic brands as their target of opportunity. The NICB has compiled a list of the 10 vehicles most frequently reported stolen in the U.S. in 2005 and has broken them down by geographical location. For Maryland area the top ten vehicles most frequently reported stolen include the following:

  1. 1994 Honda Accord
  2. 1994 Dodge Caravan
  3. 2000 Honda Civic
  4. 1994 Plymouth Voyager
  5. 2000 Dodge Intrepid
  6. 1990 Toyota Camry
  7. 1996 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
  8. 1998 Ford Taurus
  9. 2002 Dodge Stratus
  10. 1997 Ford Crown Victoria

While the 2000 Honda Accord is not listed this vehicle through the years has normally been a target for thieves. The CRV we have not seen on a list thus far of the top stolen vehicles. Your local police agency may be able to give you statistics that are more geared toward your specific area regarding stolen vehicle types.

The types of vehicles that are normally the least expensive to insure include family sedans. This includes the Buick LeSabre, Honda Odyssey, Pontiac Montana, Buick Park Avenue and Buick Century. Both Buicks are also mentioned on the least likely cars to be stolen list at the top.

Since you already have a couple of vehicles in mind to purchase you may want to go ahead and get quotes based on these vehicles to see which would be cheaper to insure. You can start by getting a car insurance quote here with us.
