How long does it take for points to come off of your driving record in North Dakota?

North Dakota has developed a violation point system to improve its awareness of those drivers who constantly violate traffic laws. Under the North Dakota point system, each traffic violation is assigned a certain amount of points. The more serious the offense, the higher its point value.

After each violation, the corresponding amount of points is added to the driver’s record. This normally occurs within 10 days of conviction according to the ND DOT. When the record reveals a total of 12 or more points, the driver will be informed that the authorities intend to suspend his or her license.

The ND driver’s manual notes there are 3 ways in which the point total can be reduced:

  1. For every three-month period during which the driver has not had any points recorded against his/her record one point will be removed.
  2. If the driver completes an approved driver improvement course such as a defensive driving course then 3 points are taken off.
  3. A person may elect to attend a driver improvement course in lieu of points on the driving record for violations assigned five or less points. This option is valid once every 12 months and may not be used in conjunction with item 2 above.

So it will depend upon which method you use to get your points taken off your North Dakota driving record as to how long it will take. For example if you were convicted of a speeding ticket for 11 - 15 mph over the limit in a speed zone of less than 70 mph this comes with 1 point being assessed to your license. If you do not get cited and convicted for another point offense in the next 3 months after this point was added it appears from the ND DOT information above that your 1 point would be removed.

You can contact the North Dakota Department of Transportation for more information on points and your ND driving record.
