In New York if you fail to obey a traffic signal, a stop sign or a yield sign and receive a traffic ticket for the violation, it is a 3 point offense. If the ticket was for disobeying a traffic control device or pavement markings it instead would be only a 2 point offense.
We believe an improper turn (making a left turn where it is not allowed) falls into the latter category and would be 2 points however you can check with the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles or the court listed on your ticket to find out for certain the points assigned to your specific violation.
The NYS DMV notes that if you are age 18 or older when you pass your road test for a driver license, or obtain a license following revocation, you will be on probation for six months. As you stated since you only received your license 2 weeks ago you are in this probationary period.
If you are convicted of speeding, reckless driving, following too closely, participating in a speed contest, or two other traffic violations while on probation, your license will be suspended for 60 days. If you are found guilty of committing one of the above violations, or two other moving violations during this second probation period, your license will be revoked for at least six months. When the revocation or suspension ends, you will be on probation for another six months.
