Are the insurance premiums for a convertible sports car higher than a hardtop sport scar?

Rating systems for vehicle differ so a convertible sports car may cost more than a hard top sports car with some insurance carriers but possibly not all.

Those that own convertible sports cars are likely to have both liability and physical damage coverages of collision and comprehensive. These option physical damage coverages many times do cost more for a convertible compare to a hardtop edition of the same model car for a few reasons such as they are easier to steal or break into and cause damage to.

For some examples in general a convertible Ford Mustang convertible will cost about $200 more per year to insure than the hardtop. Part of this is due to theft as we mentioned earlier. Also many convertibles have high loss payment rates, such as the Chevrolet Corvette convertible.

Sports cars in general carry higher insurance rates due to the nature of the car, the higher costs of repairs if damaged, etc. Convertibles especially may be more difficult to find parts for and cost more to repair then a hard top model of the same vehicle.

If you are interested in purchasing a sports car either as a convertible or hard top and want to compare the insurance rates of each, then comparison shop the rates here with us for each vehicle.
