Must I have insurance to tag and title a vehicle in the State of Florida, now that the PIP law has sunset?

Yes, you still need insurance to register a car in Florida. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (HSMV), Florida's current minimum auto insurance coverage of $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) is required to be on your vehicle as long as you have a valid Florida tag. You will need at least this type of insurance to purchase and maintain a FL tag and registration.

You will need to show proof of PDL insurance in order to get your vehicle registration renewed or issued. Previously you needed proof of property damage and personal injury protection (PIP) but between October 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007 you will only need proof of property damage since the no-fault law expired. Beginning again January 1, 2008 you will once again need proof of PDL and PIP when the new no-fault law begins.

One issue that has not changed after the no-fault law (PIP) law sunset October 1, 2007 is the penalty for being found uninsured. If you are a Florida driver who gets into an accident and are unable to show proof that you have property damage insurance, you could be found guilty of a second-degree misdemeanor. A 2nd degree misdemeanor can come with penalties of a $500 fine and up to 60 days in jail.
