It may not be possible to get a multiple car discount since you will have a policy for each state. Even if the company writes business in both states it is doubtful that you would be able to place a car in Minnesota and a car in Florida on the same policy since each state has different insurance laws and requirements.
Florida requires any part-time or seasonal resident living in FL for 90 days or more during the year to obtain a Florida personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability (PDL) auto insurance for their vehicle. The insurance regulator for Florida states that any person who has a car in Florida for more than 90 days during the preceding 365 days, resides in Florida, is employed in Florida or has children in school in Florida must purchase Personal Injury Protection ($10,000) and Property Damage Liability coverage ($10,000).
Since it sounds as if one of your vehicles will remain in Florida year round then you will need to keep this FL minimum insurance on the car for the whole year.
For the months that you are not in Florida you must continue to maintain insurance on your vehicle or surrender your Florida tag and registration at the nearest driver license or tag office. If you choose to do this, when you next return to Florida you can register the vehicle after you have obtained proof of FL insurance once again.
Minnesota requires all licensed vehicles to have PIP, Liability, Uninsured, and Underinsured coverage in the following amounts:
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) $40,000 per person per accident ($20,000 for hospital/medical expenses and $20,000 for non-medical expenses such as lost wages, replacement services, etc.)
- Bodily Injury Liability $30,000 for injuries to one person, $60,000 for injuries to two or more people
- Property Damage Liability $10,000 for physical damage to the other driver’s vehicle or for damage to property
- Uninsured Motorist $25,000 for injuries to one person, $50,000 for injuries to two or more people
- Underinsured Motorist $25,000 for injuries to one person, $50,000 for injuries to two or more people
You may be able to get an insurance carrier to write both policies, one in each state and give you a multiple policy discount. You can shop for insurance and see if there is a car insurance provider that will write both states policies for you.
