Basic PIP (personal injury protection) should extend to the driver with this policy on them and passengers in their vehicle, if they do not have their own PIP policy in which to make a claim.
Normally, reasonable and necessary medical treatment is covered under Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage of your KY automobile policy. Typically Kentucky PIP coverages provide benefits for the driver and passengers in your vehicle and pedestrians struck by your vehicle.
So it is not the same as guest PIP but passengers should be covered by your Kentucky PIP coverages since you choose to go with a no-fault policy instead of rejecting PIP and obtaining a tort policy. If you had rejected PIP then you would have been required by the state to purchase guest PIP as part of your coverages since though you and others in your household can give up the right to reject the no-fault system, you cannot make this decision for your passengers.
Under Kentucky law, the policyholder cannot reject PIP coverage for any guest passenger, thus Guest PIP is required to be carried if you do not choose PIP coverages. This coverage entitles the guest passenger to at least $10,000 of medical expenses, lost wages and similar "out-of-pocket" costs if injured while riding in the covered vehicle.
Guest personal injury protection provides coverage to guest passengers in your vehicles. It is required when all drivers on your policy have rejected no-fault coverage.
It covers:
- Medical expenses– These may include medical and surgical treatment; dental and optometric treatment; ambulance and nursing services; necessary medications, medical supplies, and prosthetic devices.
- Lost wages– If you or your passengers are unable to work due to accident-related injuries, PIP helps you recover your lost wages.
- Substitute services– Should you or your regular passengers need help performing household or other tasks due to accident-related injuries, PIP also helps pay for such substitute services.
- Funeral expenses– If a covered individual dies from accident-related injuries, PIP helps pay for related funeral expenses.
