Car Insurance Question  If my airbags have been deployed, do I have to have them replaced before my insurance will be renewed?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has shown in their research that air bags save thousands of lives each year. Normally comprehensive coverage will pay for stolen or deployed air bags. Once an air bag is deployed, it needs to be replaced. Air bags are an important safety feature, which helps to decrease your premium.

According to the NHTSA once deployed, the air bag cannot be reused and should be replaced by an authorized service department. Because the air bags only deploy once, do not drive the vehicle until the air bags have been replaced.

The guidelines of insurance companies differ so one insurance carrier may require you to replace them in your car since they have already deployed and thus are of no use while another may not require you to replace the air bags but you would likely lose out of a safety feature discount for not having properly installed airbags in your vehicle.

To find out if your specific insurance provider will require you to replace your air bags to renew your policy or if you will be able to renew have a safety feature discount due to the unusable air bags in place, speak to your current insurance agent.
