Ontario, Canada and New York State have a reciprocal agreement regarding moving violations their licensed drivers receive in the other jurisdiction. So if you are convicted of a speeding ticket in Ontario the courts there will notify the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles.
The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles states that they do not record out of state violations committed by NYS drivers in other jurisdictions. The exceptions are alcohol related violations, drug related violations and moving violations committed in Quebec or Ontario. The NYS DMV notes that under special agreements traffic convictions in Quebec or Ontario are recorded on a New York driver’s record and the offense carries points.
So a speeding citation from Ontario will be placed on your NYS driving record and assessed points. Speeding violations are assigned between 3 to 11 points in New York.
In NYS for 1 – 10 mph it is 3 points, 11 – 20 mph is 4 points, 21 – 30 mph is 6 points, 31 – 40 mph is 8 points and more than 40 mph is 11. So it will depend upon how many mph over the limit you are convicted of in Ontario as to how many points you will get on your driver’s license in New York State.
