Under Subdivision 1 of Section 65B.48 of the Minnesota State Statutes it states that every owner of a motor vehicle of a type which is required to be registered or licensed or is principally garaged in this state shall maintain during the period in which operation or use is contemplated a plan of reparation security under provisions approved by the commissioner, insuring against loss resulting from liability imposed by law for injury and property damage sustained by any person arising out of the ownership, maintenance, operation or use of the vehicle.

So in MN if you do not maintain insurance (or another type of state authorized security) continuously on the vehicle throughout the period of the operation, maintenance or use of such motor vehicle within this state while it is required to be registered or licensed, or is principally garaged in this state then you have a lapse in coverage.

The MN no-fault insurance law makes it a crime for a vehicle owner to operate or permit operation of any uninsured (unsecured) motor vehicle or motorcycle upon any public road, street, or highway. Violation of the law can result in fines or imprisonment and/or loss of driving privileges.

Furthermore, Minnesota Statutes (169.791) for producing proof of insurance say that every driver should have in their possession at all times when operating a vehicle. If a driver does not produce insurance, they are guilty of a misdemeanor.

Remember when you register a vehicle in Minnesota you are attesting that the vehicle is properly insured and that insurance will be maintained.

As for insurance, most insurance carriers will check to see if you have a continuous insurance coverage history. In general many companies will require no lapsed or terminated policies for preferred or standard driver rating. You are likely to be found to be a high risk driver if you have had lapses in insurance coverage due to non-payment or multiple claims. It is prudent you pay all premiums on time and not let your car insurance coverage lapse to save money with your insurance premiums.
