I have a New Jersey permit. This January I am flying to Florida. Can I drive in Florida with the permit?

Yes, according to a representative of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (HSMV) you can drive in FL with an out of state permit, provided that you follow the restrictions of your permit and you must have a supervising over 21 years of age fully licensed driver in the passenger seat with you at all times.

However when we asked a representative we contacted at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) she stated that with only a NJ permit you are not permitted to drive out of state.

Since there seems to be some discrepancy between the two states we would advise you to contact both the NJ MVC and FL HSMV to see if you could get in trouble in New Jersey if you drive in Florida if Florida laws allow you to operate your vehicle there with only a permit.

If you decide you will drive in Florida and have have more questions about the conditions in which you can drive in FL with the NJ permit contact the Florida HSMV directly.
