According to the Florida HSMV if you own a vehicle with at least four wheels and are registering it in Florida, you must have Florida insurance.
Florida coverage is an insurance policy delivered or issued for delivery in Florida by an insurance company licensed by the Florida Department of Insurance.
The FL Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is authorized to suspend your driving privilege, including your vehicle tag and registration, for up to three years or until proof of Florida insurance is provided, whichever is first if you fail to keep FL insurance on your vehicle.
So if your car is still registered in Florida then you will need to continue to keep Florida insurance on it. You will need to make sure that your Florida insurance company will keep your policy intact although you are now going to be going to graduate school full time in Chicago, Illinois and thus have your car garaged out of state for a majority of the year.
If your insurer does not want to continue your FL policy then you will likely need to change your registration over to Illinois and your insurance to an IL policy as well.
