Section 61-5-116 of Montana Code Annotated is titled License to be carried and exhibited on demand. This section of MT laws states that every licensee shall have his driver's license in his immediate possession at all times when operating a motor vehicle and shall display the same upon demand of a justice of the peace, a city or municipal judge, a peace officer, a highway patrol officer, or a field deputy or inspector of the department.
The Montana law does go on however to say that no person charged with violating this section shall be convicted if he produces in court or the office of the arresting officer a driver's license theretofore issued to him and valid at the time of his arrest.
So usually if you are cited for driving without a license but you have a valid one that was not in your possession at the time of the citation it appears you can show your driver's license to the court in order to the ticket dismissed.
You can speak with the clerk of the court listed on your citation to get more specific information on what you will need to bring to court, just your driver's license or something from the DMV stating that your license was valid at the time of the ticket, etc.
