Car Insurance Question  How old do I have to be to apply for a full English driving license?

When speaking of an English driving license it would depend upon if you are referring to a driver's license from England (the United Kingdom) or the United States as to the minimum age at which you could apply and obtain a full license.

In the US it is up to the individual state's laws as to at what age a person can apply for either a graduated license or full license. In many states you now must go through a step licensing process so that you obtain a full license when you are 17 or 18.If you are older then 18 you may still need to carry a provisional license for a certain amount of time before you apply and receive a full driver's license.

In the United States the minimum age to drive varies. The average age at which US states allow for a teenager to drive is typically fifteen or sixteen. The youngest age in the US at which you can drive appears to be 14 years old in South Dakota who can apply for an instructional permit. In New Jersey you must be 17 unless at 16 you enroll in a behind the wheel driving course in order to obtain a special student learner permit.

So if you are living in the US and want to find out at what age your state allows you to obtain a full driver's license you will need to contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles.

If instead you are interested in a license from England (the United Kingdom) then before you can learn to drive a car, moped or motorcycle in this area you must apply for a provisional driving license before you obtain a full license.

In general, the minimum ages for driving on British roads are 16 years for invalid carriages and mopeds, 17 years for agricultural or forestry tractors, small vehicles and motorcycles, and 21 years for medium/large sized vehicles, minibuses and buses. Britain is one of very few EU countries to allow 17-year-olds to hold a full driving license.

According to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) you can take your theory test once your provisional license becomes valid. Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional license can become valid is your 17th birthday, however you can apply for the license up to three months before your 17th birthday.

So after you have your provisional license, taking your theory test is the next step in getting a full license. If you apply for your provisional license before you are 17 but you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.
