Car Insurance Question  What coverage covers personal property such as, a wedding ring, in a single vehicle accident in which the you, the driver, are at fault? I swerved to avoid hitting something in the road at night and ended up partially submerged in a huge ditch at the side of the road.

Your normal auto insurance policy would not cover your wedding ring or other personal items lost in your car in this type of situation. Personal items are not usually covered by an auto insurance coverage, whether they be damaged in a covered loss such as your vehicle being submerged and you loosing your wedding ring or if your car was broken into and your ring, laptop, etc is stolen out of it.

Typically to get your personal items covered whether they were stolen or lost in an incident like yours, you would need to place a claim against your homeowners or renters insurance. These types of policies do cover personal items such as wedding rings, laptops, etc.

As for your car itself, it should be covered under your physical damage coverages of collision and comprehensive. Your claims adjuster assigned to your case would be able to inform you under which coverage the accident would fall under and if it was a covered loss according to the terms of your policy.
