Insurance company guidelines and policy terms differ so if your friend was driving without a revoked license and caused a wreck, he would have to inform his insurance company of both issues to find out for certain if the accident would be covered.
The accident might be covered if his insurance policy was in effect at the time if the accident and there is not an exclusion in the policy for the loss of a license or invalid licensed driver. If instead his policy notes that a driver without a valid license is not covered then he may be left without insurance coverage if he drives during his revocation and is in an accident.
Typically however, the license status at the time of a claim does not change the policy status and the claim would be paid. It is important though for motorists not to drive with a suspended, revoked or expired license since it is invalid and the person could be cited by law enforcement and their insurance may not cover them.
If a person is ticketed then there are normally penalties such as fines and a lengthening of your license suspension or revocation at the very least. If the accident is not covered then his personal assets could be at risk as well if the victim sued him personally for the cost of their damages.
If your friend finds out that his current insurance policy is fine and will cover him if he decides to break the law and drive with his invalid license it is likely that his current insurance carrier will refuse to renew his policy if his license is still revoked at renewal time. So to keep his insurance coverage in place at renewal time he will need to get his license reinstated.
