According to the North Carolina Department of Insurance to reward safe drivers with the lowest possible insurance rates, the General Assembly enacted the North Carolina Safe Driver Incentive Plan (SDIP). Drivers who are convicted of moving traffic violations and/or who cause accidents will be charged higher premiums in accordance with their driving records. SDIP points are charged for convictions and at-fault accidents occurring during the Experience Period.
A failure to stop at a red light is not listed specifically on the SDIP points list so it should fall under the “all other moving violations” section which is 1 point. Insurance companies rating systems do differ though so you should contact your insurance company to see if they go by SDIP to calculate insurance surcharges or have their own points system to determine insurance rates. Or since your insurance company must file their rates with the NC DOI so you can contact this state agency for information on your insurance carrier's rating system.
If this running a red light violation will affect your rates your agent should be able to tell you by how much. To avoid your rates going up you may want to check with the court listed on your NC ticket to see if traffic school, PJC, etc is available as a way to reduce or dismiss the citation.
