Do you give discounts for NSC defensive driving course 8.2 Edition?

There are insurance companies that give discounts when an individual takes a National Security Council (NSC) defensive driving course (DDC).

The NSC is up to their 8th edition of their online DDC. The NSC notes that the goals of the 8th edition of the Defensive Driving Course remain the same as ever: to teach drivers safe techniques by emphasizing decision-making, control, and consequences. The new 8th edition has updated content which is improved and with more impressive graphics.

There is a NSC edition 8.2 that we have heard of but only in reference to members of the military that use this edition of the DDC. We have read that this edition of the NSC class is an online defensive driving course for government motor vehicle (GMV) operators.

This edition of the DDC is to improve defensive driving knowledge and skills and improve attitudes in hope that the number and cost of GMV motor vehicle accidents and mishaps will be reduced. Thus the General Services Administration (GSA) contracted with the NSC to provide this DDC course to personnel who operate GSA vehicles.

Some carriers we work with do offer a discount for defensive driving courses. If you call to obtain a quote or are filling out our quote online, if applicable we will ask the question and show guidane of the exact course needs, specific to the carrier and state.

Below is a typical requirement list for a defensive driving course discount to be applied to an auto insurance policy. The discount is applied if the principal operator of the motor vehicle covered by the policy:

Has committed no traffic offenses for the 36-month experience period defined below or since the date of licensure, whichever is shorter:

Has had no claims based on fault against an insurer for the 36 month experience period defined below; and,

Has completed one of the following types of driving courses in the last three years based on the following categories:

For a principal operator 25 years of age or older:

  • A course in defensive driving of not less than six hours from a driver improvement clinic, commercial or noncommercial driving schools approved by and under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Safety;
  • An emergency vehicles operations course at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center;
  • A course in defensive driving of not less than six hours from a driver improvement program which is administered by a non-profit organization such as the American Association of Retired People, the American Automobile Association, National Safety Council or comparable organizations and which meets the standards promulgated by the Department of Public Safety; or;
  • A course in defensive driving of not less than six hours offered by an employer to its employee and their immediate families, which course has been approved by the Department of Public Safety.

For principal operators under 25 years of age who are applying for the discount:

  • A preparatory course offered to new drivers of not less than 30 hours of classroom training and not less than six hours of practical training by a driver’ s training school approved by and under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Safety or by an accredited secondary school, junior college, or college.

Upon completion of one of these driving courses specified above, eligibility for this discount shall continue for a period of three years from the date of course completion provided the principal driver has committed no traffic offense, and does not make a claim against the policy for which the principal driver is at fault.
