There are several types of driving records or abstracts that the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) keeps though not many are available to the general public.

There is the Statement of Driving Record which is available to anyone. This is a 3-year snapshot of a driver's history. It contains a driver's name, licence number, class, expiry date, conditions/restrictions, height, date of birth, gender and status information, driver's Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code of Canada convictions, suspensions, reinstatements over the past 3 years as well as conviction dates, earliest licensed date available, demerit point total and medical due date for commercial drivers. For privacy reasons no residential address information is listed.

There is also a License History. This lists current and previous driver history information. It contains driver's name, licence number, licence class, expiry date, conditions/restrictions, height, date of birth, gender, and status information. Also included is a list of addresses, replacements, renewals, class changes and any other amendments and respective dates, earliest licensed date available and serial number of licence. Only available to the driver themselves, law enforcement and other restricted government agencies can obtain this type of driver's history.

A Statement of Driving Record (Restricted) is another type of driver's abstract you could obtain. This is a 5-year abstract which contains driver's name, licence number, class, expiry date, conditions/restrictions, height, date of birth, gender and status information, Highway Traffic Act convictions and suspensions over the past 3 years, Criminal Code of Canada convictions, suspensions, reinstatements over the past 5 years, date of conviction, current demerit point total, fine default suspensions over the past 3 years, medical due date for commercial drivers and earliest licensed date available. This record is only available to driver themselves, or law enforcement.

The Extended Driving Record (over 5 years of information) contains driver's name, driver's licence number, date of birth, gender, height, class, conditions/restrictions, conviction date, current demerit point total, status, expiry date, medical due date for commercial drivers, earliest licensed date available, Highway Traffic Act convictions and suspensions in previous 3 years– moving (e.g. speeding, etc.) and non-moving (e.g. defaulted fines, etc.) violations, all Criminal Code of Canada violations and reinstatements. This again is restricted in who can obtain it, only a driver themselves or law enforcement can request it.

Finally a Restricted Driving Record is issued under authority of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. It contains driver's name, driver's licence number, date of birth, gender, height, class, conditions/restrictions, Highway Traffic Act and/or Criminal Code of Canada convictions for as far back as available on the ministry's data base, conviction and offence dates, current demerit point total, all suspensions, reinstatements and collisions for as far back as available on the ministry's data base, status, licence expiry date, earliest licensed date available, all renewals, address changes, class changes and road tests taken. This extensive driving record is only available to driver, Crown Attorney's Office or law enforcement. Law enforcement must provide a court order.

So there are many different motor vehicles available to you as a driver in Ontario. The one that insurance companies use is your 3 year one plus what is called the AutoPlus report. We contacted the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) to see if they could give information on AutoPlus and if a consumer could obtain this report like an insurer could.

The FSCO responded that if one is looking to obtain the Autoplus report that shows your insurance history you should contact CGI, they run the database and issue the report. CGI describes Autoplus as Canada's largest database of automobile policy and claims information. The Autoplus service allows insurers access to detailed and up-to-date personal automobile claims and policy information.
