According to the South Carolina Department of Insurance (DOI) if you have the optional physical damage coverage of "other than collision" or comprehensive then broken glass is covered. In SC comprehensive coverage will cover broken glass, such as windshield damage, and the deductible does not apply in this case.
So if a rock flew up into your windshield and cracked it then you should be able to make a claim using your comprehensive coverage and your insurer should waive the deductible that normally would apply for comprehensive claims.
As we mentioned earlier you are not required by law to carry comprehensive coverage, it is an optional auto insurance coverage so if you only have the state's minimum liability requirements on your car then your windshield would not be covered.
