I am from New York. I recently received a speeding ticket in Vermont. Will Vermont report such a violation to the NY DMV and my insurance? I was cited as doing 80 in a 50 although the officer was driving towards me so I do not believe he could have accurately assess my speed. The ticket say "2 points" on it. Thanks.

Vermont and New York State are both part of the Drivers License Compact that allows member states to exchange information regarding moving violations. If convicted of the speeding ticket in VT, expect it to be reported to the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles.

The NYS DMV has decided not to record out of state violations committed by New York licensed drivers except for in certain alcohol or drug related violations or moving violations that took place in Quebec or Ontario, Canada. Also Except for violation convictions coming from Quebec or Ontario, points are not added to a NY driver's record for out of state citations. Therefore, while you may be assessed 2 points in Vermont for this speeding ticket, your home state of New York will not assign you points.

Therefore, it is unlikely, but not impossible, that your NYS auto insurance company will not rate you on this Vermont speeding ticket for 30 mph over the posted limit since it will not go on your New York license's driving record.

If you believe you were not going as fast as the officer wrote you up for then you can go to traffic court and try to fight the ticket. If you win and are not convicted of the traffic ticket then New York will not even be informed that you were cited for the offense.
