Do you get points on your driver's license for driving without car insurance in Michigan?

Michigan requires no-fault insurance on every registered car. It is a misdemeanor to drive your car or let your car be driven without at least the basic no-fault auto coverage. If you are convicted of driving without the mandatory MI car insurance, you may be fined up to $500, put in jail for a year or both.

If you are unable to provide proof of insurance, thus driving without insurance, you may be found guilty of a civil infraction. The court may order your license suspended for 30 days or until you can show proof of no-fault coverage on your vehicle.

Drivers who fail to provide proof of insurance to the court within will also be responsible for paying a Driver Responsibility Fee of $500 or $200 for two consecutive years. The second year fee may not be paid in advance. The Driver Responsibility law does not provide for an appeal of the fee.

Under Michigan law, some traffic violations are civil infractions while others are misdemeanors or felonies. Depending on the violation and how it is resolved, you may be fined, referred to a special program or, in the most serious situations, sent to jail. In most cases, if you do not take care of a traffic ticket, your driver license will be suspended.

According to the Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) and driver's manual each time you are convicted of a traffic violation, you will have to pay certain court fines and costs. In addition, points may be posted to your driver record. Under Michigan’s point system, each traffic violation has a point value, which is set by law in the Michigan Vehicle Code. Points are placed on your driver record only after you have been convicted or found guilty of or responsible for a civil infraction. Points placed on your driver record remain there for two years from the date of conviction

That being said from all the various points lists we have seen for Michigan we have not seen any points assigned to the offense of driving without insurance. State laws do change and are amended so you should check with the MI SOS to verify that points are not currently being assessed for being an unlicensed motorist.
