I am from South Korea and just came in USA for 2 months with my international driver license, can I drive in USA with my South Korean International driver's license? I am in Houston, Texas.

The Texas Driver's Manual states that nonresidents (at least 18 years of age) may drive any vehicle in Texas if they are legally licensed to drive such a vehicle in their home state or country, and their home state or country grants like recognition to citizens of Texas.

The TX Department of Public Safety notes that generally, a person 18 to 75 years of age with a valid out-of-country driver license in their possession may drive a private, non-commercial motor vehicle in the State of Texas for up to one year from date of entry into the United States, if their home country has reciprocity with the U.S.

The TX DPS states that in order to check for reciprocity agreement status, you may contact License Issuance at (512) 424-5089. You can also get more specific information about your situation from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and by reading the Subchapter E, of Chapter 15, Part 1 of Title 37 of the TX Administrative Code.

If you plan to drive in other states within the US you should check with their Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or like state licensing agency however likely you will be able to drive with your valid Korean driver's license, and an international driver's license or permit (IDP) that translate your license to English so that law enforcement and other authorities can make sure your driver's license is valid.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) issued outside of the United States of America is recognized by States within the US but typically only as a secondary document in conjunction with a valid foreign issued driver's license. It is the foreign license that typically is acknowledged as validation that the person has driving privileges allotted to them by their home country and thus in the US while they are in it for that one year period.

The United States and over 100 other countries are party to an International Convention on Road Traffic. This Convention is intended to establish uniform reciprocal privileges on matters such as drivers' permits. The agreement also requires the US and its states to allow a foreign driver admitted to the US to drive a private motor vehicle for one year on certain conditions. The republic of Korea is listed as a country that participates in this international agreement.
