We contacted the Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) agency of Minnesota to find out for certain if your seventeen year old son could put the truck solely in his name at his age.
The DVS representative responded that Minnesota Statute 168.101 prohibits transfer of a passenger automobile or truck to anyone under the age of 18 unless any of the following conditions exist:
- Individual is 17 years of age and has successfully completed an approved course in driver education.
- Individual is 17 years of age and a high school graduate.
- Individual is an employed, emancipated minor and holds a Minnesota driver’s license.
- Individual became the registered owner of the vehicle before becoming a Minnesota resident.
This MN law does not apply to motorcycles, motor scooters, mopeds or trailers.
If you teenage son is not eligible then you would need to title the truck in your name (alone) for now and then one he is of age, transfer it to him.
