Arizona requires that every motor vehicle operated on our roadways be covered by one of the statutory forms of financial responsibility, more commonly called liability insurance, through a company that is authorized to do business in Arizona. This includes golf carts, motorcycles and mopeds.
Minimum levels of financial responsibility in Arizona are:
- $15,000 bodily injury liability for one person and $30,000 for two or more persons
- $10,000 property damage liability
AZ insurance companies notify the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) of all policy cancellations, non-renewals, and new policies. If your insurance company sends MVD a notice that your policy is no longer active, they will send you an inquiry notice to verify insurance status.
Failure to maintain proper insurance could lead to the suspension of your vehicle registration and/or driver license by the MVD. To reinstate these privileges, fees and future proof of financial responsibility must be filed with MVD. The future proof requirement is most commonly an SR22 form from an insurance company. This can be expensive to you, the vehicle owner, especially since AZ law requires the owner to carry the SR22 for three years from the date of suspension.
In Arizona de-insurance is available. De-insurance is a method of temporarily not maintaining the required insurance on the vehicle until it is ready to be driven or placed on the road again. A de-insured vehicle will not be suspended due to lack of insurance unless it is driven on the roadways of Arizona. To de-insure your vehicle, you can go to the AZ MVD site and complete an on-line De-Insured Certificate.
According to the AZ MVD once you have submitted the de-insured form, the information will be entered onto the vehicle record, within 2 business days. You can see if this is available to you during the time your vehicle is in storage so that you can take insurance off the vehicle until you come back to Arizona in December and put the car back on the AZ roadways. Also you can find out what process you will need to follow when you come back and want to drive the vehicle.
If you do not contact the AZ MVD first and just drop your insure then your registration and/or driver's license can be suspended. Be sure to then also contact the MVD and re-insure your vehicle when you return.
Regarding canceling your insurance and a refund, you would need to contact your insurance agent to find out how to do so and how much of a refund you may receive for not using up the rest of the policy period you paid for. If your car is financed though and you have a lien holder that requires you to maintain insurance coverages on your vehicle then you normally would need to leave full coverage on your vehicle even if you put it in storage.
