The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (HSMV) stated to us that vehicles used as livery services, such as taxicabs and limousines, are exempt from the mandatory personal injury protection (PIP) coverage that personal auto insurance policies must include according to the FL no-fault insurance law.
As a taxi driver there are certain liability coverages that you must carry according to Florida laws. These auto insurance coverages include:
- Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) coverage of $125,000 per person, $250,000 per occurrence and
- $50,000 for property damage liability (PDL) coverage.
As a cab driver you will want to make sure you have these required coverages in place so that you can legally operate your vehicle in FL.
While PIP is not a requirement on a Florida Commercial Auto Policy, it may be included on some policies. Commercial policies have many more variables and options that can cause PIP to be included or not included so speak to an agent about what coverages you are mandated to have and what options you may choose to add on to your policy to give you the best protection for you, your vehicle and the passengers you will transport in the taxicab.
