Can a seventeen year have sole ownership of an automobile in the state of Texas?

We contacted the Texas Department of Transportation to find out if there is a minimum age to own a car according to TX law. The representative for the TX DOT responded that Texas has no age restrictions in order for an individual to be recorded as the owner of a vehicle.

They went on to say that insurance companies may impose age restrictions on persons they insure and may charge higher premiums for certain age groups. Since proof of financial responsibility (liability insurance) is a prerequisite to obtaining Texas registration, an individual’s ability to obtain this insurance may limit his ability to register his vehicle.

All applications for title and registration should be processed through the tax assessor-collector’s office in the county of the owner’s residence. There is a listing of these offices on the DOT website.

If additional information is required, please contact their Customer Services Call Center in the Vehicle Titles and Registration Division at (512) 465-7611, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST.

There may be additional information contained in the entire body of Texas law that also addresses these issues the representative went on to say so they do not represent this information as a legal opinion.

So it would appear that you may title a car in your name only as a minor in Texas, however you would need to also be able to get insurance in your own name for the vehicle, which may be an issue. Most insurance companies will require a parent or guardian to sign on your policy with you since it is a legal contact and you are not yet an adult at 17 years of age.
