While Tennessee is not part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) which Virginia is a member of, TN does still obtain in information from other states regarding moving violation convictions.
If the VA courts inform the Tennessee Department of Safety about the speeding offense, if you are convicted of it, then it will likely go on your TN driving record. We have contacted the TN Department of Safety to find out if points will be assessed or not. The representative that got back to us stated that if you are convicted of an out of state ticket, such as speeding in VA, and their courts inform the TN DPS that the offense will go on your driving record and points will be assessed.
Since points to your Tennessee driving record are assigned for out of state tickets, it will be based on the amount of mph over the posted speed limit you were doing in Virginia as to how many points you will receive. In Tennessee the points for speeding violations are as follows:
- 1 to 5 mph in excess of speed zone- 1
- 6 to 15 mph in excess of speed zone - 3
- 16 to 25 mph in excess of speed zone - 4
- 26 to 35 mph in excess of speed zone - 5
- 36 to 45 mph in excess of speed zone - 6
- 46 mph and above in excess of speed zone - 8
