First you will need to check with the Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS) to make sure you are allowed to drive out of state with only your learner's permit. We have heard that you can but you should check with the AL DPS to be certain and also to see what restrictions they require you to follow while out of state.
From what we have read, Maryland allows an individual to use a learner’s instructional permit provided that the permit holder is at least the same age as that required of a resident for the vehicle being driven in this State (15 years, 9 months), and that the individual is accompanied by and under the immediate supervision of an individual who is a least 21 years of age, has been licensed for at least three years to drive vehicles of the class being driven and is seated beside the holder of the learner’s instructional permit.
State laws can change though so to be certain you can drive with your Alabama learner's permit we would recommend that you contact the AL DPS to make sure you are allowed to drive out of state and also the Department of Motor Vehicles of Maryland and any other state you plan to drive though to find out if you can drive in that state. If you can drive in other states with your permit you should see if there are restrictions, beyond the AL conditions, that you must follow in these states.
